Literature
Introductory Course (suitable
for
beginner to intermediate students)
Literature reflects the spirit and
character of a nation and its people. Join us on this fascinating
journey into 3000 years of Chinese history and culture as revealed
through the country's most-treasured classics. These works are a
crossroads for nearly every academic discipline, from history to
psychology, politics to religion, sociology to anthropology. Our
exploration will take us from China's ancient mythology (the Creation,
Pan Gu, Fu Xi and Nv Wa, Archer Yi) and cosmology (yin and yang, etc),
into the Confucian era and the origins of Taoism through the work of
Laozi. From there, we will delve into ancient poetry (Book of
Songs, Qu Yuan, and others), Tang Poetry (Li Bai, Du Fu, Wan Wei), and
then into the great novels (Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Journey to
the West, and Dream of the Red Chamber). Finally, we will review
the modern and contemporary works of such literary giants as Lu Xun.
China's rich literary heritage abounds with mythological, religious, and
philosophical works, poetry, fiction, drama, and fascinating essays.
Come and join us as these treasures unfold before our very eyes,
revealing all of the intrigue and mystery of China from ancient times to
the modern day, resplendent with the passion and beauty of a truly
magnificent culture. This is a survey course intended to introduce
all of the major works, movements, and developments in Chinese literary
history in a way that is easily understandable and manageable for the
layperson. Thus, we will examine excerpts from major works for
discussion in order to well position you for further reading and
independent study.
