This workshop is suitable for beginner to advanced students.
Taught by Cate Carter-Evans or Sonia Tay.  Click here for instructor profiles.

This hands-on course is designed for anyone wanting to experience the joys and rewards of knitting.  Join us as we embark upon a fascinating journey into the world of hand knitting, where we will explore the terminology, techniques, and of course the tools of this rewarding craft.  We will discover amazing colors, fabrics, and the different textures that are created by various knitting stitches all along the way.  Student knitters will be encouraged throughout the course to apply the techniques that are learned in class to their own design aesthetic and chosen project.  Projects include but are not limited to gifts, holiday decorations, clothing, afghans/throws, cushion covers, hats, scarves, baby blankets, and more.  You will be introduced to more than a dozen different stitches, as you learn to read patterns and charts, cast on, bind off, knit, and purl, pick up stitches in the round, increase/decrease stitches, finish, embellish, and correct errors.  We will experiment with a variety of stitches to create different patterns and textures with dazzling results.  Starting with basic knitting skills, students will develop a repertoire of beginner, intermediate, and more advanced knitting techniques to create their own designs from concept to finished product.  Each lesson will focus on a specific technique, illustrated with an in-class demo, one-to-one instruction and guidance, and lectures and workshops supported by handouts and other materials.  We will learn about and if time permits visit together the exciting yarn and supply markets here in Shanghai.  Discussions of pattern work will stimulate students to think like a knitwear designer and view hand-knitted items in a whole new light.  Each student will keep a binder documenting self-designed stitch work, which will be an invaluable reference tool for years to come.  At the end of the ten weeks, students will have their own hand-knitted garment to take home as well as the knowledge, experience, and confidence to develop projects independently.  Once you experience the wonderful rewards of knitting, you'll be hooked!
